Help, my water bottle smells! The smell of your water bottle has surely put you off drinking before now. But do not worry — we will let you in on three simple household tricks that clean your bottle perfectly and get rid of the bad smell in no time.
Whatever you use your water bottle for, you really should clean it regularly. Water that has been standing is enough to cause an unpleasant smell. Drinks with a strong flavour of their own, such as coffee or tea, but also sugary soft drinks or milk, can leave a bad smell or even mould in the bottle.
That cannot always be washed out again with hot water and soap. So here are three household tricks you can use to clean your stainless steel bottle quickly and easily and get it back into shape:
Tip 1: acid makes it clean
Tip 2: baking powder drives out bacteria
Tip 3: washing-up liquid fights mould
Tip 4: a brush for proper brushing
Twing tip: rinse the bottle out daily
1. Acid makes your water bottle clean

Acid kills germs and is ideal for cleaning your water bottle.
Acidic liquids such as vinegar or lemon juice kill germs and loosen dirt from the surface. Simply mix the vinegar or the lemon juice concentrate with hot water and leave the mixture in your bottle overnight. So that the unpleasant smell does not give way to a sour aftertaste, rinse the stainless steel bottle out thoroughly with soap several times the next morning!
2. Baking powder against bacteria in your water bottle

Baking powder and bicarbonate of soda are tried and tested household remedies and a real all-rounder for cleaning!
Baking powder is not only good for light, airy baking, it also helps in the fight against smelly bacteria. The same goes for bicarbonate of soda, by the way! Simply put one or two sachets of baking powder or bicarbonate of soda into your bottle and fill it with hot water. Then wait an hour or two until the powder has had time to work. Do leave the lid open! At the end you only need to rinse your bottle out thoroughly and it is ready to use again!
3. Washing-up liquid makes your water bottle mould-free

Leave washing-up liquid to work in the bottle overnight.
Washing-up liquid does not only work perfectly in your dishwasher, you can also use it for an intensive clean of your bottle against mould. Simply put hot water and dishwasher powder into your bottle, leave it to work for an hour or two and scrub everything well with a sponge or a bottle brush! Do make sure you rinse your bottle out really thoroughly with water at the end.
4. Why is a bottle brush indispensable?

A high-quality cleaning brush for your water bottle.
Even if you clean your bottle regularly with vinegar, baking powder or washing-up liquid, a special bottle brush can work wonders. With its help you also reach the smallest gaps and corners, where bacteria and mould particularly like to settle. You will find the right bottle brush for your water bottle in our shop.

Cleaning your water bottle regularly prevents smells and mould.
As a rule, stainless steel bottles do not belong in the dishwasher. If need be, one or two cycles are possible with our Twing Eco bottles thanks to their top quality. Still: anyone who rinses their stainless steel bottle out briefly with hot water every day and lets it dry does not even run the risk of unpleasant smells or mould appearing. We also recommend a clean every six months using one of the three points described above.
